Fairlight and The Magick
Friday August 1st
The origin story of Fairlight and the Magick is pretty mundane and hardly uncommon. The band came together through connections made through informal jams, broken-up bands and a Craigslist ad. The pieces started coming together in the aftermath of Helene. The members of the band came from all directions; New Jersey, Colorado, Florida and Charlotte to make WNC their home. Once the band members were all in the same room, the power and soulfulness of Fairlight De Torres' voice was astonishing. The mission of the band was clear—to develop a sound and style to fit Fairlight’s amazing skill. The first thing that became apparent was the rhythm section of Jeff Rubin on drums and Walter Anderson on bass can bring a high level of skill, feeling, and groove to whatever they play. Whether the song is a slow blues, driving rock, funky or soulful…there is ALWAYS deep pocket there. The first few steps of the band were tentative. However, after a few practices, something magical happened…well, OK… Magick happened. The band found its footing and David Harris started turning up the guitar amp loud enough to let the guitar really sing. The result is a musical stew of funky soul and psychedelia that is rooted in the blues and is always played with a lot of feeling. This band means it! Bluesy psychedelic soul!
